Things are far too complicated for that. I don't agree with your implications. This is not global. It's strictly radical Islamic, Sunni vs. Shia radicals. Actually, there's a bigger chance they kill a lot of each other leaving fewer U.S. drone hits necessary. The Al Qaeda Sunnis have removed their attention from fighting the big powers to seeing a chance to set up their dream Islamic state that was always their end goal. As if they were successful, all Muslims will then look at that state and say "oh boy, we want that too!" Not.

Sometimes I even wonder if Saudi royals are doing some of the same thing they've done in the past, send their troublemakers elsewhere so they're no trouble at home. Iran's leaders are cynical, they support Hezbollah in the past for strategic purposes, now they have probably lost control and probably not happy about what's going on either.

Look, Egypt is a huge Sunni country and they won't even tolerate the Muslim Brotherhood any more, calling them terrorists, much less Al Qaeda. The big world conflagration you seem to be excited about is Al Qaeda's dream but most of the rest of the world don't see it going that way. All that's going to continue to happen is just an awful lot of pain and suffering for a lot of civilians as borders and rulers and rule of law constantly change and their terrorist hits cause an infinite variety of ramifications.

The approach of Russia is instructive, doesn't want to have anything to do with radical Sunnis and will support any dictator willing to put them down. But they already did Afghanistan and Chechnya, been there done that, ain't going to get further involved themselves beyond supporting strong dictators putting a lid on things and continuing cracking down on them when within their own borders.

Sat, 04 Jan 2014 21:30:33 +0000 artappraiser comment 188153 at http://dagblog.com
