People seem to think that if we ignore proponents of creationism, the myth will eventually wither away, but it shows no sign of withering on its own. Jefferson's policy clearly does not work.

While it's true that a single debate won't have much impact, knowledge does not advance with a single devastating blow. It takes thousands of cuts to kill embedded ignorance.

In short, scientists should take advantage of every opportunity to educate people about evolution.

Sun, 05 Jan 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Michael Wolraich comment 188181 at http://dagblog.com I think you failed to read http://dagblog.com/comment/188173#comment-188173
In reply to Negative form If P, then

I think you failed to read the part about that form of reasoning being a logical fallacy, and not something to be encouraged.

Sun, 05 Jan 2014 00:39:40 +0000 Verified Atheist comment 188173 at http://dagblog.com Negative form If P, then http://dagblog.com/comment/188168#comment-188168
In reply to If I understand the

Negative form

If P, then Q will occur.

Q is undesirable.

Therefore, P is false.

P equals the teaching of Darwinism (evolution)

Q equals Social Darwinism

If (P) Darwinism, then (Q) Social Darwinism occurs

(Q)Social Darwinism is undesirable

and could have been prevented, had P been soundly rebuked as a bad theory, undermining the need by some to consider the less fortunate, instead of survival of the fittest.

Sat, 04 Jan 2014 22:44:41 +0000 Resistance comment 188168 at http://dagblog.com Oh Donal, I could not let http://dagblog.com/comment/188167#comment-188167
In reply to There was a debate like this

Oh Donal, I could not let this go.

Probably the first comedy album I ever ran across.

I love Bill Cosby. A quick search turned up this.

Later in the article it says:

It's possible that brain structure is set early, but it's also possible that it's influenced by experiences and environment. Kanai and his colleagues note in the report that other research efforts have already shown that brain structure "can exhibit systematic relationships with an individual's experiences and skills," and "can change after extensive training." And people certainly have been known to change their worldviews as they get older.

Maybe Bill Nye is dabbling in some of that extensive training and trying to relate his views without having it turn into a screaming match. Although I can't imagine Nye screaming at anybody.

I hope this doesn't backfire on him and he turns into a creationist.
