Pakistan poised to launch military action against Taliban

Pakistan could launch a full-scale military operation against the Pakistani Taliban in tribal areas near the Afghan border as early as this month, its defence minister said, warning insurgents against violating a ceasefire.

Gunmen burst into a courtroom in Islamabad on Monday, killing 11 people in the heart of the capital, dashing chances of a peace deal with the Pakistani Taliban. It denied any role in the assault, with a splinter group claiming responsibility.

Pakistan's defence minister, Khawaja Asif, told Reuters that the government would not hesitate to bomb militant hideouts or send forces into the tribal areas if the Taliban did not abide by the ceasefire announced last weekend [....]

So after 14 years our withdrawal plan was... don't withdraw? Afghanistan 4evuh?

What about all those promises?

And Karzai's such a meany - why won't he take our troops? What could go wrong with complete immunity for troops along with free access to drones? He could be our Shah Reza of the 21st Century.

I have to admit I have a tad of something like schadenfreude about Pakistan here. It's like: haha you have to be straight now about wanting to kill Taliban et. al., can't play that duplicity game anymore about the U.S. making you do something you don't like.

But then it's also highly likely this is all a temporary Karzai show and we'll backtrack with new leadership in Afghanistan and my own game will be over.

At the risk of making a cheap shot, there already is civil war in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I'm sure that there are highly placed officials in all three governments (the third is ours) who think that our continued participation will be advantageous to one or another faction. Whether it will promote eventual civil peace? That's a tough case to make.
