Without having read the Koch report either, from what you have said and the excerpts you quoted, it sounds like both are saying Climate Change is a given and we have to learn to live with it. One report says look at all the good things that might happen; the other says look at all the horrible things that will happen. Human nature being what it is, is it really surprising that some people prefer to be hopeful?

Not that prophets of doom are never useful. Sometimes they can scare enough people into changing their ways and avoid doom but then they are disbelieved retroactively.

Timing of prophecies is important as well. Too soon and too much harping will tend to make people tune out. Too late and then efforts would be better directed at figuring out what to do after the event, assuming there is an after.

Just musing. I am not a doubter but I do wish the conversation would move on from the 'is not' versus the 'is too' stage.

Well, there are definitely several strategies out there for denying climate change:

There is no long term global warming. We've already plateaued and cooling is about to set in.
Global warming is part of the natural cycle. Nothing we can do about, even if we wanted to. How arrogant we must be to think we can change nature?
Global warming will be good for us.
It's too expensive to fix.

And, of course, sometimes they like to use multiple of these at the same time.

As I was digging deeper into this today, I found this blog that explained who the morons were that wrote this report for Koch Bros. front group Heartland Institute. I guess this was part of their effort in educating the public that Charles declared in his op-ed last week. They new the UN had this panel working on the effects of climate change. So they made up their own report using almost the same acronyms (NIPCC) to confuse and to make it seem official. They released it after IPCC report came out. It is rather interesting how Kochs bank roll these charlatans.

Heartland Institute on the other hand, in its NIPCC “Climate Change Reconsidered II: the Biological Impacts” document, will say that climate change is good for the world, will have a net benefit for both plants and human health. This is the latest line run by right wing think tanks like Heartland, the coal industry’s ACCCE coalition, Peabody Coal, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and echoed across the blogosphere by climate deniers.

This set of messaging and all 'reports' to back this line, all appear to be coming from one organization, the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change, and specifically from its chairman and former president, Craig Idso, one of the NIPCC’s lead authors, who has been arguing the same “C02 is beneficial” line for nearly 20 years, along with his father, Sherwood Idso.

This article is a good read. It gets into how much they were paid to do this. You would think MSM would pick up on something like this and run with it. I probably should of done a blog on this but didn't realize what all was going on here.

Nope. The UN released a report March 30 from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report was pretty bleak in what damage to expect from climate change. Last week the Guardian covered it.

A United Nations report raised the threat of climate change to a whole new level on Monday, warning of sweeping consequences to life and livelihood.

The report from the UN's intergovernmental panel on climate change concluded that climate change was already having effects in real time – melting sea ice and thawing permafrost in the Arctic, killing off coral reefs in the oceans, and leading to heat waves, heavy rains and mega-disasters.

The report came from 300 scientist and was 32 volumes. It was the result of 3 years work and grew into this big report.
