Here is a take on how Fox has normalized racist and xenophobia from a blogger at TPM.Fox makes it easier to express views that were previously considered unacceptable. Ms. Kohn ignores that role.

This happens everyday in the United States, from my experience I think that Liberal/Progressives are far more respectful. Ms. Kohn needs to tell her Conservative friends to be more respectful

I have a Conservative acquaintance who flatly states that he views Obama is a liar. Another cites Conservatives as being fiscally responsible despite the spendthrift GW Bush GOP Congress. They are always surprised when you note that Reagan increased the deficit, even when you have provided the information before. Facts don't take.You are respectful but not hopeful when you have conversations with Conservatives.

I have even shown respect to bigots.

A lot of people aren't swayed by facts or reason, but some are. You can sometimes get results by providing people with information, or pointing out the flaws in their thinking. Wattree seems to prefer vituperation(as do a great many right-wingers, probably a majority).

I have exasperating memories of people who weren't conservatives who wouldn't give their opponents a fair hearing. The pacifist who was contemptuous of anything that wasn't pacifism, the person who lost her temper as soon as I defended Israel, and the professor who was outraged when I said that the internment of Japanese-Americans didn't make it wrong to fight Hitler(the last especially bugged me).

You don't have to like or respect conservatives( I usually don't), but just take a moment to hear their arguments, and refute them.

Civil conversations between Liberals and Conservatives occur everyday. The idea that Liberals are yelling at Conservatives in the workplace or restaurants is ridiculous. It is likely that Conservatives who do not accept climate change, evolution, etc will not alter their views when faced with facts.

Civility is a two-way street. What are the requirements of a Conservatives? Are Conservative under any obligation to denounce people like Limbaugh, Beck, Bachmann, Palin, etc., or are Liberals the only ones who have to atone?

She wasn't talking about the "truth", she was talking about things like tolerance, civility, and rational discussion. While I admit I don't have a great deal of tolerance for conservatives(although far more than Wattree has), I think it is often better to try to persuade people than to simply denounce them as bigots and liars--although certainly there are people who really are bigots and liars.
