Very well put, Momoe. I love "poetry is painting of words". Perfect!

Some of the best poetry comes from people who have lived that nightmare and found a way to express their feelings about it. I saw nothing at all wrong with the one poem I read of Valerie Macon's--the one so viciously critiqued.

But at the same time, I understood why the community of poets were so incensed at the choice. Poet Laureate is a high honor and should have gone to an established poet who has worked throughout the years to advance the poetry of the state.

She was a bad choice, but she didn't deserve that kind of cruelty. I hope she can put it behind her and go on to write more poems about the people who so desperately need a strong voice.

I have been thinking about this. Street poetry is different from a classical poetry that follows rules. Why would a writer of poetry rake a street poet over the coals. Homelessness is chaotic at best. They live with noises of the outside. They live with shame. There is no structure accept night and day. Most of all there is hunger, fear and pain. For me poetry is painting of words. That painting is going to reflect all the things I just listed and more.

That has got to be tough blow to her.

This went viral in the last week from a group in Orlando who has a campaign "To Rethink Homelessness." They have been doing these for the past year. Florida has a real big problem with this. But I think I have already told you about some of it.
