Hill went on to connect-up with the with the Immoral Majority crowd. That irked me, but I was long gone by then. But even with all of the water under the bridge I must have still liked him, because I was quite sadden when he died. Just prior to his death we spoke over the phone (his secretary's daughter had a crush on my son in college), and I think it was clear to both of us that we were happy to speak to one another.

I just wish things could have been different. He never would have won me over, but I think he really believed what he preached, and what he stood for. I don't how, but he did. I'll never forget the last thing he told me as a kid before I left the church for good. He said, "I'm like a pilot, whose job is to fly you into the arms of God."

He was a very eloquent man, but I was destined to take another flight.

Mon, 05 Jan 2015 19:04:41 +0000 Wattree comment 202729 at http://dagblog.com Elder Hampton seems like the http://dagblog.com/comment/202728#comment-202728
In reply to I Pay my Tithes to the Homeless

Elder Hampton seems like the kind of Christian I respect - the one who lives his beliefs. I considered it extortion. It placed pressure on the members to not only tithe, but pay two and three times what they were "supposed" to pay so the rest of the church couldn’t calculate how little money they made.

I've never heard of any church doing that before (and I attended many prior to my "conversion"). The not-so-good reverend should be ashamed of himself.

Mon, 05 Jan 2015 16:47:37 +0000 Verified Atheist comment 202727 at http://dagblog.com
