Copyrights also apply to dust cover art, particularly on any books published after 1976. Publishers somehow allow a cottage industry of dust jacket facsimile marketers to operate (I assume it's in the publishers self interest) but using the art in larger posters, etc. isn't o.k.

Edit to add: it's "after 1976", not "before 1976".( a date mentioned to me by the largest facsimile printer) The Berne agreement , 1988, also relevant. So the publishers appear to be less strict on jackets before 1976 (1988?)---which may have to do with the fact that there typically were not separate copyright logos on the jackets. Publishers aside, if one reprinted a Salinger or Steinbeck jacket, he would hear from their estate lawyers.

I am interested in this subject by virtue of the fact that I have collected vintage dust jackets, particularly those "signed" by Salter, Thurston, etc. Jacket design was integral to a modernist movement in graphics and art in general. The practice of having art work on the jackets "signed" by the artist ended about 1960. (oh, no way was this a denigration of artists by the publishing industry). Occasionally there is a good book between the covers. I was fortunate to find Henry Miller's "Wisdom of the Heart" in first edition with a near fine dust jacket by Alvin Lustig, 1941.

If anyone has a first edition dust jacket of "Shane" in any condition, please contact me.

Like any collecting, its about obsessive behavior.

For anyone interested, a good reference is "By its Cover", Drew and Sternberger, Princeton Architectural Press

Wed, 14 Jan 2015 16:48:04 +0000 Oxy Mora comment 203018 at http://dagblog.com Patents differ from copyright http://dagblog.com/comment/203080#comment-203080
In reply to Your New Year's Public Domain Report, 2015

Patents differ from copyright in significant ways, but I think you'll still find this comic strip amusing, if not a bit too close to reality.

Wed, 14 Jan 2015 13:25:44 +0000 Verified Atheist comment 203080 at http://dagblog.com I reviewed some http://dagblog.com/comment/202774#comment-202774
In reply to Your New Year's Public Domain Report, 2015

I reviewed some correspondence by Jefferson and Madison but I still have tech probs and you would already know what I am writing about.

There is Article 1 Section 8 of our Constitution which specifically talks about a reasonable time?

I recall that in 1979 certain outlets spoke about a give a way to Disney.

This is ridiculous.

I can find Twain but somehow Desoto screwed that up.

I can find Plato, except when you get into the issue of translation.

Free flow of information has been really impeded.

And yet, there is enforcement!

I can go to Youtube and get so much info and then, the next day lose that info and Youtube says:

There are copyright problems. hahahahah

I use youtube all the time, as you well know.

Sometimes my old blogs 'lose' my videos.

I am writing as a citizen with no real background.

But you might have blogged about the most important issue of our day.

As Jefferson noted, the control of ideas by corporations, might be more than just the Kock Brothers.

One last note

The suit against George Harrison for My Sweet Lord was just ridiculous.

Patent laws might even be more damaging.

What do I know?

Thank you for bringing up an issue concerning capitalism that few explore.

Like I said, if I could fix my tech probs, I might enlighten you more about my objections.

the end

Wed, 07 Jan 2015 04:36:08 +0000 Richard Day comment 202774 at http://dagblog.com
