Catheter hook-ups ... Oy. I had a hip replacement in 1996 and a knee replacement in 1997. ao I can relate. In those days they gave you a morphine drip but handed you a button to push to release the morphine when you felt you needed it. Now I think they do an automatic IV drip. I had my hip replacement when I was 45 and a half years old, so when they got me out of bed to walk, I had no problem beating all the 66 year olds in a race down the hallway and back.

Thank you Missy. I have always believed that humor was essential to coping with adversity and to having good relationships with both family and friends, My family has always laughed a lot and found comedy in our everyday lives. My mother sometimes felt my sister and I poked too much fun at her, but that was because she gave us so many openings, and it was all meant in fun ... and the truth is, my mom had a sly sense of humor and a wonderful way of looking at things. Two examples; She once told me that when buying a box of spaghetti, I should get the thin spaghetti because you get more ... and once, near the end of her life, when she would sit in her chair and fall asleep with her rosary in her hands, she told me that when she was a little girl, the nuns told her that if you fall asleep saying the rosary, it still counts ... so now, since she was falling asleep anyway, she might as well make it count for something. As for my sister, well, she was, and is, one of the funniest people I know.

You might like this little vignette which went down today in a hospital room in Kentucky.

My distant cousin had a hip replacement and was recovering in his room. Another guy was next to him---both of them coming out of the drugs. Apparently the other guy is a worker in a distillery.

Eddie was trying to adjust his gown and managed to flash a young Nurse's aid as she walked into the room. His wife yells "Eddie,what the hell you doin?"

Eddie says, "I didn't think it was hooked up right".

The nurse's aide said, "Looks like you're hooked up pretty good there, Mr. Wilkens" and walks out.

In the next bed the guy comes to. "How ya'll? What time is it? Too bad we don't have a filth of bourbon in here" and passes out again."

"Eddie, how come you did such a dumb thing with your gown?"

He says, "when you feel this bad, you just don't care."

That was certainly worth waiting a week for, Mr. Smith, I loved it all. I don't think I've ever told you how much I appreciate your weekly contributions to my world, an oversight I'll correct now. I really do look forward to spending even a tiny bit of my Fridays with you, and that's a feeling I treasure.

The story is wonderful! Just proves that there's humor in almost everything if we look for it - and have someone to tell the tale as well as you do. Nothing is mundane if you can laugh!
