In the last few years the congress has cut back the allowance that is received for SNAP. There is less to spend and most people run out the last week of the month.

Can you imagine trying to stay within your 2/3 limit of foods that are approved while shopping and not going over in either category. Then ending up at check out after everything is scanned and find out you will either have to pay for the overage or pull things out of the shopping bags. On top of that you have people standing behind you commenting and giving you dirty looks. You would have to spend time at the kitchen table with old grocery receipts making a list so you would not have to go through that embarrassment at the end of the month. Your receipt should always tell you what you have left on your card.

Thanks for commenting. I hope you are doing well and enjoying the wonderful smells and breezes of the fall as trees get ready for a winter nap.

Tue, 06 Oct 2015 01:32:14 +0000 trkingmomoe comment 213642 at http://dagblog.com This has nothing to do with http://dagblog.com/comment/213639#comment-213639
In reply to Wisconsin GOP Passes Bill Banning Poor People From Buying Shellfish, Potatoes and Ketchup

This has nothing to do with nutrition. This has everything to do with Wisconsin tax payers not wanting the poors to eat too fancy.

Or is it?

A few years ago, this happened in Michigan: A receipt found in a grocery store parking lot indicating a food stamp purchase of lobster and steak for $140. True story.

Although I am loathe to defend this piece of crap law in Wisconsin, or in any other state that tries it, (and I am not defending it) I think the intention is to prevent food stamp fraud.

But, in the meantime, apparently eating high quality food is reserved for the not poors.

Now, I am against fraud of any kind, but there has got to be a better way. I'm sure as hell not gonna depend on any modern day Republican to come up with a solution that doesn't involve punishing the poors.

Mon, 05 Oct 2015 20:48:25 +0000 wabby comment 213639 at http://dagblog.com Excellent points. They vote 87% Republican and have a higher rate of voter turn out then the rest of the state. There are 2 talk radio jocks that imitate Rush and rule the roost in that area. They created Walker and his right wing credentials which they sold to that Republican base in those suburbs. Walker was tailored made for the fears and culture of this group. Out side of this bubble Walker was just a corrupt empty headed nut job that wasn't going to sell any where else in the country. This is the case right now with Republican governors that are running for president.

So we see these states that are being run by extreme right governors push for legislation that caters to the fears and culture which includes regional bigotry that will keep them in power. Most of these states have fiddled around with SNAP in a way to keep that regional base group satisfied and voting for them. Making SNAP hard to get and use only hurts the state's economy. That few percentage points of profit loss makes a difference between a grocery store chain expanding in that state. There are less competition and groceries become more expensive.

We need to argue more in this direction on the internet to counter the right wing PR. Killing Milwaukee to run people of color away only helps to impoverish the suburbs that are around that city. Allowing Milwaukee to build a cultural diversity will only enrich the suburbs. A city is the heart of a region. Hurting it only hurts the whole region around it. You have to feed the poor in that city to keep the economy healthy in the region.

Sat, 03 Oct 2015 02:43:03 +0000 trkingmomoe comment 213560 at http://dagblog.com As to Wisconsin one would http://dagblog.com/comment/213544#comment-213544
In reply to It also bans shrimp, crab

As to Wisconsin one would have to doubt people in Milwaukee on SNAP are blowing wads of parsimonious SNAP credit on lobsters.

This is a typical GOP idea of government: the law costs them nothing but haggling legality with the USDA, it implies the unworthy poor are rolling in $$....and as the GOP loves to do...it seeks to run the lives of the unworthy and make decisions for them, when Republicans are Constitutionally protected from ever changing anything in their delusional lives of bigotry, endless lying and partisan chicanery that threatens national prosperity and security.

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 15:58:31 +0000 NCD comment 213544 at http://dagblog.com It also bans shrimp, crab http://dagblog.com/comment/213536#comment-213536
In reply to But the shellfish shells are

It also bans shrimp, crab legs and lobster. I live on the Gulf coast so I have shrimp in my freezer and get it at the fish market that came off the boat. It is local and affordable. I get other fish sometimes when I am there that is on sale. The last time I got some salmon steaks. I guess it must be very expensive in Wisconsin.

I have to give a lot of thought in serving good meals on a shoe string budget and I still can add some sea food, I buy it from the fish counter and never buy it from the freezer. China soaks their fish in something to make the fish swell up with water. I don't like the taste of that solution in my fish.

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 12:54:48 +0000 trkingmomoe comment 213536 at http://dagblog.com But the shellfish shells are http://dagblog.com/comment/213532#comment-213532
In reply to Wisconsin GOP Passes Bill Banning Poor People From Buying Shellfish, Potatoes and Ketchup

But the shellfish shells are so great for target practice, isn't that is a 2nd amendment freedom...?

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 06:04:47 +0000 NCD comment 213532 at http://dagblog.com You're hooked.
