Putin is more benign than most Russian leaders from the last 500 years - maybe Yeltsin was simpler, but he was also leading Russia off a cliff. Despite a few strategic moves, Putin's also a far cry from the expansionist Brezhnev.

Re: Turkey, they shot down 1 jet which was over their airspace & the Syrian resistance killed the pilot (Russia is attacking Assad opponents under the guise of fighting ISIS - like that scenario better?). Certainly nothing to do with fascism. So Erdogan said something dumb, and his approach to power seems regressive - he was still elected rather fairly, so that's what the majority of the country wants.
