The stat is the '28 election isn't included, and FDR was in for 16 years, Truman 4, so the Nixon/Bush thing started in '52. Nuts as he was I would take Nixon over Dubya, he formed the EPA, & Safe drinking Water Act, Endangered Species Act ,Occupational Safety and Health Act.

The GOP could have saved Nixon in the Senate from impeachment, but the right hated him, and Watergate served to get rid of Nixon and give the people the fantasy that the Congress and press were 'doing their job' on official corruption.

Then we had Reagan's much worse than Watergate Iran/Contra affair, and later Dubya lying us into Iraq. Both of which were later deftly swept under the political and legal rug.

On his deathbed, it was confirmed that Watergate Deep Throat was Mark Felt, #2 in the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover.

Felt leaked the penny ante Watergate stuff to WaPo's Woodward anonymously, and likely had it in for Nixon as Nixon appointed Patrick Grey head of the FBI instead of Felt when Hoover died.

Felt apparently didn't care about the standard illegal operating procedures of the Hoover FBI, but became a sudden anonymouus all-American hero when he helped the right ditch Nixon.

Rachel Maddow just made what was, to me, an astounding statement. I have to take her at her word because her staff is freakin' amazing, so here's the stat (paraphrased): No Republican has been elected to the Presidency since 1928 without either a Bush or Nixon on the ticket.

Sure. It didn't hurt him. Nothing hurts Trump; his followers will back him no matter what.

But it didn't HELP him, either. He isn't expanding to pick up new followers with much speed at all. His whole act is built around keeping the audience he's got, not going out and getting a wider one. As I've said before, it's an example of the talk radio/cable news logic, where you're looking for a small and intense audience rather than a big one that only likes you okay. (Or in other words, Trump is trying to be a Howard Stern, not a Tom Hanks.)

Oh, yeah. Trump probably still comes out of that convention with a nomination. If he goes in with ten or eleven thousand delegates and doesn't get the nomination, his (populist, deeply anti-institutional) partisans will lose their minds. And yes, he might unleash a third party candidacy. So they'll have to give it to him.

I think the only way he doesn't get it is if he craters down the stretch run, so it's pretty clear that he would go into the general wounded and not viable.

Otherwise, I think the result of a brokered convention is that Trump doesn't get to pick his own running mate, but has to take Marquito.
