I think the speech accomplishes several things. It ties John loud mouth Congressman to Trump and signals .the level on which this campaign is going to be fought; and it gives the lazy press some angles if they care to vet crazy talk by republicans. Not to mention giving heart to Democrats that Republicans will be confronted.

There's an old saying that politicians campaign in poetry and govern in prose. Obama is very good at the performance art of public speaking. Many of his campaign speeches, especially his most famous from 08, were inspirational and emotional. I can be moved by a well performed speech but I won't allow myself to be moved if a politician makes one. Just as I won't allow myself to be turned off if a politician isn't a good enough actor to give a good performance when giving a speech. It's about policy and character not the ability to act. That's why I wasn't a fan of his early speeches.

But Obama is very intelligent and when dealing with policy or substantial issues he can make a good argument. His latest speeches weren't about inspiring people or moving them emotionally. They are about explaining issues and views in clear and convincing ways. He's very good at doing that too. And those are the type of speeches I want my president to make. That's why I like these speeches more.
