Humanity does not advance or improve in a straight line. Yes, it wasn't better then.

Medical doctors were still bleeding people into the 1920s. See Bad Medicine, Doctors Doing Harm Since Hippocrates. The leading British medical periodical is Lancet, named after the knife used to bleed you, nothing in medicine changed for almost 2000 years from antiquity.

Wilson said World War One was to make the world safe for democracy. Of the 3 defeated land empires, divided ethnically into nations, only one democracy was left by 1939. Finland.
