Careful, "Blowing Smoke" is not to be used as a pejorative around here.

Maybe I meant "Threat and Squeeze" or "Squeeze and De-cyst", who knows. I only know "Bad Cop, Worse Cop" so I'm at a disadvantage.

Part 2 will address the refugee issue along with where this leaves us with the band of usual contenders.

Hat's off. I forget how you can f'n write. What an amazing piece, and I promise you I'm not blowing smoke. Two things, one a set of questions to ask as we focus on our breathing, and the second an effort to be funny (work with me dude):

First, so important that we take that proverbial deep breath so that we can appropriately measure and appreciate progress made and develop the prudent path forward (all while keeping an eye on, as you note, with what the U.S. role is now and where it might me going). I guess the logical follow-up questions, to me, are given steady progress in eliminating ISIS as a threat to the region, where does that leave things? Touching what I guess is a third rail in American politics (actually not quite sure honestly), can we envision the breakout of peace with Assad still in control and, if so, is that peace maintained in a way that -- for want of a better term -- is consistent with U.S. interests in the region. . . leading I think to the question of defining what those interests are. My own immediate and long-term concern, which I really think most folks share, are the civilians still in the region and the refugees.

Second, notwithstanding the subject matter, I had a good laugh and showed a colleague your reference in the first sentence of the second paragraph to what would be a perfect name for a good cop, bad cop Bonfire of the Vanities type law firm in the Bronx, i.e. "Threat & Ease". I guess I'll keep my day job.

Trump's sent hundreds of ground troops into Iraq - haven't heard boo from the usual Clinton critics on the far left worried that she'd escalate the Mideast or a no-fly zone would turn into WWIII, or all the other typical bullshit. Trump must appreciate the free ride and reach-around to boot.
