Thanks for taking the time to read and engage with this post. We live in an area where we see more of the dissonance than some of our allies. People tend to think I exaggerate some of the experiences I've had in the south, but the truth is often very interesting.

Danny, I think you are truly on to something here. Asking about the golfing is apolitical and doesn't bring out defensiveness. I have often said that if you want to really get to know someone, make small talk with them. That's when people show what they really think about the world. Ask them the "big questions" about the world around them and you will likely hear very moralistic and ethical answers. But when you are just chatting, the real person comes out. I don't mean that in a negative way; we all reveal who we are when relaxed, including revealing often, that we are just as idealistic as we say we are.

your idea of talking about the golfing puts people in a non-defensive mode and will help to identify people who think for themselves and may see Trump differently than they did back when they thought he was being truthful.

First they came for football and I didn't stand up for them beacause I didn't play football. Then they cam for golf and I didn't stand up for them because I didn't stand up for them. By the time they came for my Ultimate Hackeysack, there was no one to stand up for me.
