Thank you for the New Yorker link. It's good to see that some Americans are waking up to Canada's superiority. But if Canada were to take over the US (again), it would lead to other problems. 1) ISIS is irrelevant - a footnote in history. Between fracking and the mass adoption of renewables, we've broken the back of oil & natural gas dependency, on Russia and the Middle East.

2) re: the New Yorker article, the French-Indian War was to steal French lands. If there'd been no Revolution, the British would be moving to the Mississippi and beyond. w/o a Revolution, slave-enabled cotton would have been British, and the Brits wouldn't have given up slavery so easy only n 1833. Shipping cotton by train to northern textile mills made economic sense. Cotton by ship from Jamaica or Egypt to Bristol was costly, and the growing of cotton in Jamaica wasn't that efficient. As for that enlightenment, the Brits shoved French speaking Canadians (Acadians) into dangerous tin cans to sail to Louisiana swamps - hardly a liberal act, more akin the the Trail of Tears. The extermination of native Tasmanians with an island-wide chain (infamous Black Line of 1830) gives an idea British rule was no huge step ahead of Yanks.

3) infrastructure in middle america is fine - no one lives there. Population and production are overwhelmingly in the top 300-400 cities. Cheaper and more sane to move people to those Democratic bastions of wealth and liberal thought than to build a bunch of bridges and highways hoping that will make rural america productive and non-radical.
