That is still a large plurality of GOP voters seeing Putin favorably. The Republican establishment may be very much against Putin, but that seems just another issue on which the base and the establishment are totally divorced. I don't think that it is a salient issue for the base, so they are unlikely to push back at the anti-Putin establishment policies and anti-Putin pronouncements or votes won't hurt any GOP reps and senators in '18.

That said, this swing in sentiment does mean that any revelations about friendly contacts between Trump's campaign and Putin's people are going to hurt Trump less with his base than one might have hoped for. Meaning the incentives for elected GOP representatives will always point against impeachment. One needs to assume incredible character and moral clarity on their part to think they will make that move. So yet another reason to accept that there won't be any quick and easy solutions here. It's going to be a long road.

McMullins meme appeals as accurate (I admit to its initial allure myself) because we read so much news on Trump and Russia.

But trying to beware of confirmation bias, and always trying to beware of spin and hypberbole, as even he points out there was the new Russia sanctions bill that the Senate passed with overwhelming bipartisan support this month. 98 Senators for, 2 against (with Corker as sponsor, no less) is not chump change.

Not to mention all the followup news I read that Putin is plenty upset about that.

This op-ed is hyperbole, pure and simple. It is a tiny tiny faction of the Republican party that is "the party of Putin". The majority of them are more likely to be still stuck in the 1950's, thinking the Russians are our dangerous numero uno cold war enemies, ala McCain.
