The push certainly predates this administration. It is difficult to tell what Trump's role in policy formation is and will be but his administration has exhibited two clear trajectories that point toward war:
They have abandoned the balancing act Obama attempted to keep the Shia/Sunni divide from exploding.
The only government agency not set up for institutional paralysis is the Department of Defense.

I agree except to note that the push you refer to has been around a lot longer than the current administration and we now have a maniacally egotistical sociopath for CiC. Trump will do anything for a standing applause and there was one that worked especially well. The one action he has taken that has been praised as "Presidential" by the MSM was the stupid attack on the Syrian air base. [I say stupid but some say beautiful.] His ratings took a jump for a few days. Pavlov would have known what to expect down the line as a result. It has been suggested that it is all kabuki theater but that analogy means a scripted ending I believe. The penultimate scene to be played by the current cluster of would be killer clowns is yet to be written but the major writers involved, the ones trying hardest to sell their scripts, are mostly known for their poorly played horror shows.

The push toward conflict with Iran has been a consistent theme for this administration. If Flynn had not lost his job, more pieces would have been set in motion toward war by now. I worry that the gloves will come off shortly after ISIS has been rolled up.
