The Feds Homeland Security is at preliminary study stage with same thing, I just saw it because I happened to turn on Fox News to see what was going on there, and Shepherd Smith was doing a segment on it, googling after that is how I found the LATimes story above. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) will officially kick off its partnership with Mississippi (University) for the test and evaluation of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) next Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Mississippi.

DHS, acting under William N. Bryan, secretary for science and technology, will be joined by Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran; Mississippi Rep. Steven Palazzo; the Adjutant General of Mississippi Maj. Gen. Janson D. Boyles; Mississippi State University’s president, Dr. Mark Keenum; and other Mississippi federal and state representatives to launch the new partnership and observe sUAS demonstrations.

Following what it called a rigorous and highly competitive review process, Mississippi State University was recently chosen to lead the DHS research project. According to the university, the DHS S&T “Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Demonstration Range Facility” will support homeland security operations and training by providing flight and exercise facilities that will support operational evaluation of sUAS in a variety of applications.
