Seth Abramson largely concurs with this idea in latest string of tweets, but from earlier timeframe, 2013. Says Putin wouldn't meet Donald because would have political fallout, too obvious, but gave him Sberbank loan, had his property right hand man meet him, permits guy, big announcement - and an ill-advised less than restrained night or 2 of celebrations in which they scored some heavy kompromat on the big idiot.

Oh, I think I"d seen that, but most people were thinking that Trump hadn't delivered on promises to make Putin willing to go through with it, but I just don't think Trump Tower had any upside for Putin and would work against a cyber operation, whereas cash payouts could be private and more valuable for Trump than the Tower anyway. (Putin has no problem giving away a billion dollars here and there).

As proof, he showed me an email on one of his phones from someone claiming to be an entertainment executive in Los Angeles. “Your a dick,” the email began, and escalated from there, with the sender threatening to molest Cohen’s girlfriend. (Cohen is married.)

He told me that he gets a lot of emails and calls like this. Still, his mood lightened when a man at the coffee shop approached us [....]

I suspect Putin nixed Trump Tower knowing the presidency was a much bigger prize - and a Trump Tower would bring too much visibility at a time when he wanted to push all his under-the-radar resources. Putin's not as stupid as Trump, need I remind.

And yeah, this is my own idea, not gleaned from Twitter et al. and contrary to all the other theories I've heard so far.

Trump attorney reached out to Kremlin to pursue Moscow Trump Tower project

[.....] Cohen's own attorney provided documents to the House intelligence committee that included a reference to the Moscow project. In a second, separate statement Monday, Cohen said the proposal "was not related in any way to Mr. Trump's presidential campaign. The decision to pursue the proposal initially, and later to abandon it, was unrelated to the Donald J. Trump for President campaign. Both I and the Trump Organization were evaluating this proposal and many others from solely a business standpoint, and rejected going forward on that basis."

Cohen told CNN he reached out to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, describing the message as "an email that went unanswered that was solely regarding a real estate deal and nothing more." In the second statement, Cohen said he contacted Peskov after it was suggested that the proposal would require approval by the Russian government, but that it was never provided.

Trump and Cohen discussed the proposal three times, though Cohen said he "never considered asking Mr. Trump to travel to Russia in connection with this proposal" and did not brief on him on his decision to terminate the development.

Cohen told CNN that the conversations were "short." The first was to inform him about negotiations happening for a possible deal. Second time was to sign a letter of intent. The third time was letting him know that the deal was off after he decided himself to terminate it.

Cohen said the proposal was under consideration from September 2015 until the end of January 2016 and progressed to soliciting building designs and negotiations over financing [....]
