I really did figure Twitter's was mostly just getting rid of data considered both useless & private, since they obviously have tons. Just would help in this case.

I understand this from having all my records subpoenaed for a D.O.J. investigation unrelated to any possible wrongdoing by me, just as regards a client. Professional prosecutors are zealots and ask for everything they can get; in my case, all my records for all my business activities for 7 years. When what they really needed to see (that would be exoneration of my client in my case) was just a tiny portion of my records. So I had to hire a lawyer to talk them down. Because they don't trust the uninvolved third party, me in this case, not to be in on the problem or just trying to protect my client.

The point: If the Trump or Bush D.O.J. were asking for tons of Twitter records, would we be happy if they were giving it to them?

Also, we consider Twitter rich so they can afford to spend lots of money hiring people like lawyers and clerical to sort through everything the government is asking for and then have their lawyers say this: no, you only need this stuff for your case, that other stuff you don't need to see. It's not fun when this happens to you when you are not as big and rich as Twitter. They just take all your stuff, expect you to do all the work or be in contempt and don't care if it puts you out of business. Even if you try to do it on your own, It takes a lot of unpaid time to cooperate with an investigation, when you did nothing wrong. There is not even any piddling recompense like with jury duty, you are just threatened and screwed. They presume you are not a cooperator but a collaborator, they don't trust anyone and want as much as they can get.

Edit to add: the flip side of this for the paranoid about privacy: our gummint asks for stuff they never ever glance at! I believe this from the bottom of my heart. We do not have the Stasi, far far far from it. Remember being paranoid about electronic toll systems because it records where you go and when? Who do you think looks at those? Nobody, not even in a murder case. Too much work. I'd be willing to bet the NSA hasn't a clue what they are looking at from what they do get: overload, cognitive dissonance, we are too huge, there is too much data.
