Hamilton was “bewitched and perverted by the British example” and favored a “monarchy bottomed on corruption,” Jefferson alleged.

But there was another front in this bitter war: Statuary. While Jefferson and his followers tended to oppose monuments devoted to any of the nation’s founders—such effects were were trappings of monarchy, Jefferson maintained—they were positively apoplectic over any suggestion that Hamilton was worthy of commemoration. In the aftermath of Hamilton’s duel with Vice President Aaron Burr in July, 1804, Jefferson and his lieutenants were concerned that the emotional response to Hamilton’s death might lead to the erection of statues celebrating a man they despised. John Armstrong, a Jeffersonian lieutenant, reported to James Madison from New York City four days after the duel that “the public sympathy is a good deal excited for Hamilton and his family, whether this is spontaneous or artificial I do not know, but it probably partakes of both characters.” The city of New York “took the direction and assumed the expense of his funeral, and the English interest talk of erecting a statue to his memory,” Armstrong reported.

Armstrong’s dreaded “English interest” succeeded in erecting a marble statue of a toga-wearing Hamilton in 1835. The sculpture was placed in the rotunda of the New York Stock Exchange, and was the first marble statue produced in the United States. In the minds of Jefferson’s heirs, the fact that a statue of Hamilton graced the New York Stock Exchange simply confirmed his role as the founding plutocrat. The idea that Hamilton was the champion of wealth and privilege would be invoked for decades by Democratic Party politicians long after Hamilton’s death [...]

Democracy:MESSY! I looked at the manifesto link and it is so over the top it like conservative parodies of political correctness, also reminds me of some SDS literature of my youth. It is like the imaginings of Rush Limbaugh of a left that doesn't exist any more one that he is still getting old conservatives all riled up about.

But then I thought no way this could be Russian ops precisely because: Putin wants to be the Teddy Roosevelt persona! Talks softly, carries a big stick, manly man, rough riding, hunting and fishin, wrassling alligators or whatever, forcing troublesome peoples to calm down, and intellectual to boot. Proving you are the bestest smartest manliest manly man stock in the world, a bull moose, and your people along with you, they are the A-team, will protect the weak third world peoples and other weak types like disabled and kittens and puppies, but only if they deserve it. Unfortunately Pootie can't see that the rest of the world doesn't see a TR, they still just see: a shifty KGB guy.

Of course, as we have seen, that is no guarantee that Russians might be involved because: they are most definitely not the A-team, their ops are sort of clueless bout 'Merican culture. And that goes for back to Soviet days, now that I think on it. Their spies, they just don't get us. So nope, this can't be a Russian op. That's not to say that if this group could talk the right game, they might get a donation from same.

Fri, 27 Oct 2017 17:00:35 +0000 artappraiser comment 244294 at http://dagblog.com An actual crowd gathered to http://dagblog.com/comment/244293#comment-244293
In reply to Protesters Deface Teddy Roosevelt Statue Outside NYC Nat.
