Pep rallies are evil. Teaching them passion about patriotism to tribe, presuming that it is a natural human condition and that it might go the wrong route if not trained to do with a fake tribe complete with hierarchies and a mythological mascot.</p> <p>People should be fans of a talent, not fans of a team or tribe thick-or-thin do-or-die <em>just because</em></p> <p>Sub-cultures are easily maintained within a different nation state, there's ample evidence in history for millenia. And quite happily if there is general policy of tolerance. Too bad when consideration of creating a new separate nation state is based upon myths rather than realities of "is it going to cause practical good for us or practical bad for us?"</p> <p>And I definitely don't buy the shared genes argument. Evolution requires mixing of genes.</p> </div> </div> </div></div></div> Sun, 29 Oct 2017 23:23:03 +0000 artappraiser comment 244383 at http://dagblog.com All I ask is a legal http://dagblog.com/comment/244308#comment-244308 <a id="comment-244308"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/comment/244299#comment-244299">lotsa coverage @ The Guardian</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>All I ask is a legal referendum. A Putin-inspired minority mob to rip another chunk out of the EU is not a direction I can support.</p> <p>Of course this map showing (encouraging?) every grotto with a gripe does not make for an easy path for the EU to maneuver - -it's difficult enough with 25 or 26 equal voices from tiny Malta to Germany, covering diverse tastes from the lowest Ruthenian to the loftiest Parisian. The EU isn't a movable feast - it's a model for economic and democratic convenience  - not as inspired as the US' constitution, nor as wacko. Keep Saxony and Occitan and upper Lombardy on simmer - nobody's going anywhere, and the EU doesn't have a model for simple re-accession, so multiple independence movements will leave the community looking like a bloc os Swiss cheese.</p> <p>Where is our Lincoln?</p> </div></div></div> Sat, 28 Oct 2017 06:21:03 +0000 PeraclesPlease comment 244308 at http://dagblog.com lotsa coverage @ The Guardian http://dagblog.com/comment/244299#comment-244299 <a id="comment-244299"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/link/spain-moves-take-over-catalonia-after-region-declares-independence-23771">Spain moves to take over Catalonia after region declares independence</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>lotsa coverage @ The Guardian, of course, here's the main article:</p> <div> <div> <div> <p><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/27/spanish-pm-mariano-rajoy-asks-senate-powers-dismiss-catalonia-president">Spanish PM dissolves Catalan parliament and calls fresh elections</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div> <div> <div> <p><em>Political crisis deepens after secessionist MPs vote to create ‘Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state’</em></p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div></div></div> Fri, 27 Oct 2017 22:32:05 +0000 artappraiser comment 244299 at http://dagblog.com
