Feinstein romps ahead in California primary with turns to the left.

By David Weigel @ WashingtonPost.com, June 3 at 6:32 PM

SACRAMENTO — It was supposed to be a defining battle for the Democratic Party’s future, California’s Sen. Dianne Feinstein against her party’s fired-up activist left. Amid predictions of a Democratic civil war, one of the state’s largest labor unions endorsed her opponent and urged voters to reject “establishment politics.”

Yet days before Tuesday’s top-two primary, Feinstein is cruising toward what even her field of opponents acknowledge will be a giant victory. Her best-known opponent, state Sen. Kevin de León (D), who charged into the race last year on a message of generational change, has found himself challenged by a little-known Republican for the second spot in the November runoff, as lesser-known liberals fracture the anti-Feinstein vote.

Feinstein has bent the race her way by portraying herself as a reliable liberal in the Senate minority — and by moving further left and co-opting issues key to the state’s Democrats. And as she prepares to turn 85, she has allied herself with the party’s young activists.

In the campaign’s final stretch, Feinstein has run as an opponent of the death penalty and a defender of the state’s marijuana industry, new stances that have cut off lines of attack by de León, while drawing no perceptible backlash for their timing.

“I don’t want to not grow. I don’t want to not learn,” Feinstein told reporters last week at a roundtable on the Trump administration’s proposal to block federal funding of Planned Parenthood. “The world changes. We change. I think that’s what should make me an attractive senator, particularly to young people.”

The senator’s frustrated opponents say the real fight will take place in November.

“If I do get into the runoff, it changes the complexity of the campaign,” de León said in an interview at an office near the state capitol. “When I engage with voters, up and down this state, everyone — all social and economic classes — believe it’s time for a change.”

But nothing in the race so far has borne out his optimism [....]

Tue, 05 Jun 2018 07:31:49 +0000 artappraiser comment 253402 at http://dagblog.com Maybe. http://dagblog.com/comment/250451#comment-250451
In reply to The Former College Dropout

Maybe.

In Feb 08 I bought ¨Dreams From My Father¨ in the Newport Vt. book store and the pleasant woman proprietor said ¨Trying to learn about the next president? ¨ Of course he ´d already made himself known with his 2004 barn burner at the convention.

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 22:38:56 +0000 Flavius comment 250451 at http://dagblog.com The Former College Dropout http://dagblog.com/comment/250448#comment-250448
In reply to Dianne Feinstein is vulnerable

The Former College Dropout Who Would Be Dianne Feinstein

Kevin de León’s Senate campaign is testing the muscle—and the limits—of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

By DAVID SIDERS @ Politico.com, March 22, 2018

SANTA ANA, Calif.—Fourteen people and three rescue cats were awaiting Kevin de León when he pulled up to a PetSmart and stepped inside through drizzling rain. In his briefing folder, an aide had included a note titled, “Cat puns you can use, if you’re feeling festive!” [....]

Yet if de León’s success at the convention showed the power of the Democratic Party’s left flank, the days that followed have laid bare its limitations. A champion of progressive causes in Sacramento, de León is largely unknown statewide. Typical of state lawmakers, despite his outsize influence crafting state law, de León’s plight outside the capital is jarring anonymity. Calls he places to prospective donors go to voicemail, and the checks he does receive are small.

Watching de León campaigning between displays of DentaStix and turkey-and-sweet-potato dog food, state Sen. Josh Newman, a colleague of de León and a representative from the area, turned and said, “What is it, 9 in the morning on a rainy Saturday? And he’s out talking to cat people.” Newman took that as a positive sign. It wasn’t long before the 2008 presidential election, Newman said, that “Barack Obama was speaking to crowds of, like, eight.” [....]

Thu, 22 Mar 2018 21:00:25 +0000 artappraiser comment 250448 at http://dagblog.com Hal... and... http://dagblog.com/comment/249666#comment-249666
In reply to Thanks OGD. This story - Feinstein's work to expose the CIA's torture program and to stop it - shows her at her finest. I confess to having largely forgotten about these important efforts. I did speak of them at the time they were happening but they slipped my mind. Feinstein deserves a lot of credit.
