Establishing tax havens within the country was just one reaction by the Kremlin, seemingly caught off guard as aftershocks rippled through currency and financial markets.

“Russia has no strategy on how to react to this situation, to these new economic circumstances,” Evgeny Gontmakher, a prominent opposition economist, said.

The most immediate effect is being felt by Oleg V. Deripaska and his aluminum giant, Rusal, which has lost about one-third of its value on the Moscow stock exchange. “This is a new stage,” Mr. Gontmakher said. “This is targeting for isolation a very big, export-oriented company. That is very painful.” [....]

Thu, 12 Apr 2018 00:06:56 +0000 artappraiser comment 251310 at http://dagblog.com The Moral Case for Sanctions http://dagblog.com/comment/251153#comment-251153
In reply to Russian Oligarchs sanctioned by U.S. Treasury for "Worldwide Malign Activity"

The Moral Case for Sanctions Against Russia

Rather than talking in terms of strategy or punishment, American officials should return to a kind of thinking that Republicans used to love: values-based foreign policy.

By Masha Gessen @ NewYorker.com, April 6

Don't necessarily agree, just pointing it out.

Sat, 07 Apr 2018 23:20:26 +0000 artappraiser comment 251153 at http://dagblog.com Oh geez.
