The Len Bias law was promoted by Tip O’Neill and signed into law by Ronald Reagan. It targeted crack cocaine despite the fact that Bias death was due to powder cocaine. Blacks and whites use crack at similar rates, but black communities were targeted by law enforcement. Incarceration of black men skyrocketed. The criminal approach to drug addiction has been a disaster.

The conservative solution for almost every problem is to make it a crime and put more people in jail. It won't do anything to solve the problem of drug abuse and addiction and create a lot of pain and suffering for a lot of people.

boy, the comments over there @ NYT seem to be nearly unanimous in one thing: outrage about these prosecutions. They have different reasons and many might even vehemently disagree on "what should be done", but they all seem to think this approach is teh stupid or worse. Another thing that comes through loud and clear is that there's a lot of anger about prosecutors out there.
