Nathan Larson lives with his parents, and spends most of his waking hours on the Internet in between intermittent work as an accountant. And it’s mostly there that he’s developed some views that put him on the extreme fringes of society.

He believes in instituting a patriarchal system, with women under the authority of men; he supports abolishing age restrictions for marriage and laws against marital rape; he believes that white supremacy is a “system that works,” that Hitler was a “good thing for Germany,” and that incest should be legalized, at least in the context of marriage. And at one point in a conversation with The Post, he seemed to express admiration for the system run by the Taliban in Afghanistan, noting that the country’s birthrate fell as a consequence of increased opportunities for women after the United States’ more than decade-long intervention.

But Larson, 37, is hoping to take his views toward the mainstream by mounting a campaign for a congressional seat in Virginia, running as an independent libertarian for the state’s 10th district, a swath of land across three counties in Northern Virginia outside the Washington suburbs. The seat is currently held by Republican Barbara Comstock, but has attracted strong Democratic interest; Hillary Clinton won the district by 10 percentage points in 2016 [.....]

In 2015, his former wife was granted a restraining order against him after Larson returned to Virginia, where he grew up, from Colorado. And though his ex-wife later committed suicide, a custody battle unfolded for a child of his that she gave birth to after they split up, according to local media accounts. The El Paso County Attorney at the time, Robert Kern, argued successfully that Larson would not be a fit parent, according to the Colorado Springs Independent. Larson said he has only met his daughter once, during a supervised visit with a social worker

The fact that none of it is the truth isn't the point. If your final paragraph was understood as representing reality today then we'd all be fine. Of course it's pie in the sky - that's what MAGA is.

Women gaining ground in the alt-right movement isn't about anything other than men recognizing that they need them to expand. That's all. And the picture of the wife in lipstick and high heels waiting for the husband to come home with flowers is what these women hope to emulate. He goes to work, she stays home and vacuums, the kids go to school ... life is good.

Very interesting piece. If it is true as the author claims that they are still not well accepted by most of the participants, then it really just shows them up to be bitter misogynists, pure and simple.

And further, those women are offering pie in the sky.

The truth for men of the 1950's was not as pretty as Ward having June Cleaver (even with the twin beds) nor even the retro version of Marabel Morgan wrapping herself in saran wrap to surprise hubby when he comes home. Lots of men died early from the stress of being the sole breadwinner for large boomer families, just that simple. And to be competitive enough to be a "real man" successful super earner, well that's the story of Don Draper and friends of Mad Men, isn't it? Alcoholism or near alcoholism, vicious backbiting, no real friends, divorce, total family dysfunction, erasure of dreams, etc. All that soul-killing "man in a grey flannel suit" stuff. Along with the kid's orthodontist bills. Wasn't the easy wonderful world of fairy tales...

Here's a excerpt that makes me wonder if the larger issue here may be why so many women (white, for obvious reasons) voted for Trump; or more specifically, for the idea of MAGA.

A frustrated yearning for a mythic past of material abundance, at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to build careers and achieve financial security, is not gender-specific. Young people face evermore obstacles, higher demands and continually dwindling returns in the form of work benefits, job security and pay. We shouldn’t underestimate how some young white women, when faced with this bleak economic landscape and then presented with a rosy image of 1950s domestic bliss, may look back to 1960s Freidan-era feminism as having cheated them out of a family and a luxurious lifestyle, all supported by a single income. The men on the alt-right might point to diversity initiatives and mass immigration as having dismantled their career prospects; the women are furious that they have to consider career prospects at all.
