Immediately I think of what problems we share way across the globe with Australia and what we don't. The cross-culture learning thing. One thing that immediately stands out to me: they've managed to pretty much solve a lot of societal violence with gun regulation et.al. Without even getting into the topic of the article (as a minority of criminal minds will always be with us,) another jumps at me, so what is a true intractable problem, their crime rate reduction narrows it down for us, domestic violence: The vast majority of killers are partners and acquaintances. And interestingly, it doesn't say all victims are women, the whole graph:

Australia’s homicide rate – which includes manslaughter and murder-suicide – is the lowest in quarter of a century, according to research released last year. The vast majority of killers are partners and acquaintances.

Two-thirds of victims are men, but women are particularly vulnerable to being killed by a partner.

More than 80% of perpetrators of murders and other violent crimes are men.

A reminder all our complaining about the internet and the development of tribal echo chambers, but back in the day, we were stuck with whether the A.P. would decide to run something about this in the paper. We wouldn't be able to compare/contrast so easily...

Wed, 20 Jun 2018 04:51:21 +0000 artappraiser comment 253823 at http://dagblog.com
