UNITED NATIONS (AP) — An estimated 2.3 million Venezuelans had fled the crisis-wracked country as of June, mainly to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, the United Nations said Tuesday.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that those fleeing — about 7 percent of Venezuela’s 32.8 million people — cite lack of food as the main reason for leaving. U.N. humanitarian officials report that 1.3 million of those who fled were “suffering from malnourishment,” he said. [....]

At the Task Force website they tout their 2016 Seeds of Solidarity initiative.

It consisted of a one page pdf showing a smiley old white lady from the Task Force, based in California, giving seeds to the "browns" (destitute Venezuelans) so they can avoid starvation by growing food on their balconies. They call that "solidarity".

For Roger Harris and the Board of Task Force on the Americas it is tough. They don't mention Colombia might like to see Maduro go because 1 million starving and mostly destitute Venezuelans have sought refuge in Colombia. Maduro = "sovereignty", "will of the people"....the Task Force recommends "dialogue" between Maduro and the opposition who are mostly either dead, in jail or living outside the country. They speak of the legendary revolutionary "Bolivar" and Maduro as his popularly acclaimed reincarnation. The anti-imperialist Task Force is also apparently anti-human rights.

They make no mention of human rights. Like the right to the rule of law, food, medicine, medical care, or hospitals with functioning electricity and pharmaceuticals, and doctors.

The Maduro government has implicated the government of Colombian President Santos in the drone attack along with the US. The Colombian government, which recently joined NATO, is hostile to Venezuela and closely allied with the US-backed regime change efforts aimed at removing the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela. Colombian President Santos recently predicted that Venezuelan President Maduro’s fall is imminent.

As a humanitarian organization, the Task Force on the Americas, condemns the use of lethal drones. As an anti-imperialist humanitarian organization, we: *

Condemn illegal, violent and unconstitutional attempts to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nicolás Maduro.

Demand full respect for international law and respect for Venezuela’s right to self-determination and sovereignty.

Reject any form of interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs.

Support dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition.

Demand that the US lift sanctions and restore full diplomatic relations with Venezuela based on mutual respect.

I don't know why it's so difficult - Chavez was basically a breath of fresh air, an unusual figure, while Maduro's a corrupt jerk. And it's likely Chavez's pros would have vanished under his excesses had he lived, like many Latin tinpots. Is that tuff?

Counterpunch's Roger Harris, who wrote the linked piece, latest productions, see if you get the drift...particularly the Venezuelan "humanitarian crisis"...note the " quotes" inferring doubt about a crisis - after 1 million Venezuelans have fled the country- and who is responsible, and to top it off, Harris unabashed confidence in the free and fair, valid, reelection of Maduro:

This is actually pretty interesting news-wise as to the meta of it, that Chomsky has basically become an imperialist running dog to some, not pure enough. I had no idea the Nicaraguan situation had caused such passionate splits on the left. In my experience, the past practice for left ideologues when favored rulers would go problematic after decades of rule would be to just pretend like it wasn't happening and make ridiculous excuses. It used to be more "solidarity uber alles," i.e., you don't criticize "our guys", you pretend they are saints. Chomsky is definitely being true to self in old age.
