Sounds like a sacrificial lamb situation to me. Where they might not have done it if he wasn't causing so much reactive agitprop.

But it should be noted that NYTimes' Adam Goldman & Michael S. Schmidt go further than me in suggesting:

Mr. Strzok’s dismissal was not unexpected. He is the second senior F.B.I. agent to be fired as a result of the inspector general’s investigation. In March, Andrew G. McCabe, the former deputy director, was fired after the inspector general repeatedly faulted him for misleading investigators.

G-men gotta behave themselves, including politically, precisely because they can get in blackmail-like situations.
