The news in the last 2 months has been dominiated by bone saws,self-destructive trade war,overt purging of blacks from voter rolls, major news on Trump's Russian collusion, conviction of his lawyer & campaign manager, along with evidence of his decades-long tax avoidance.and non-profit foundation's malfeasance.
I don't get that not reaching out *this time* compares to reaching out last time. Beto didn't get closer than predicted say a month ago - he just couldn't continue his magic without reaching out - he peaked, hit his ceiling. I guess we're not supposed to learn any lessons from anything, just lather, rinse, repeat and pray for more GOP overreach (and hope that's sufficient to bolster our numbers & carry on the revolution)

Democratic candidates had tried reaching out. Those candidates lost by wide margins. Beto got closer than predicted. Hopefullly, Democrats can maintain support for 2020.

O’Rourke called for Donald Trump’s impeachment, even as his more liberal colleagues declined to touch the topic, and touted his support for “Medicare for All.” He supported calls to abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Medicare for all might be a winning issue though I doubt it, but it's too soon to call for impeachment. There needs to be incontrovertible evidence of serious crimes by Trump for that and it's not here yet. Calling for abolishing ICE is just stupid. Sure we need reform but there has to be some police force on the border. It would be like BLM calling for abolishing the police.

Read Cilizza's point #5 on Sherrod Brown - what's his secret sauce? Aside from raw numbers in the House, the election was pretty much cheering on "Close But No Cigar" with some cherry-picked successesup - a situation that's getting pretty annoying after a couple decades.

Still, I was worried the GOP'd steal the election outright, with voting machine hacking, disenfranchisement, et al. Likely they succeeded with Georgia and some others, but by far the most important is simply taking the House with a decent margin. Let the Trump investigations go to Mach II.

So was this "As good as it gets"? Could a slight bit of attention to any wavering disgusted-w-party GOP or Conservative Independents have allowed Beto to improve overall support? Rather than relying on GOTV for his obvious base + hoping for Cruz's support collapsing?

I've no idea where you're going, or if you're trying to go anywhere. The article discusses Beto's use of significant cash for his Senate race, and his static ratings for likely voters despite that spend. Is there a comparable Governor's race that showed successful or unsuccessful attempts to entice crossover Republicans that's relevant to this discussion? If not, can we please just discuss the article as written?

Essentially many Democrats art not going for Centrist votes, they are running as Leftists. Beto is a prime e ample.

Beto appears to be attracting new voters and not searching for Centrists
