Well, they're quite a different style and focus, but in the 70's lots talked about Joni's lyrics. But Dylan was 10 years before her and is still going 10 years after, and has over twice as many albums (not counting his Willbury collaborations, etc) and in the earlier days especially would pack in 3x as many lyrics per song. (And I don't think he ever released an instrumental album). So if you want them to talk about you, you stay active.

And then I could go into merits, but that's all personal. But let's say Joni was never any kind of assumed spokesperson for a generation or as controversial.

Reminds me that I heard or read some critic lately complaining that Joni Mitchell does not get enough credit for the awesomeness of her lyrics, as opposed to like, Dylan. And I thought: so true.
