Yeah, I was kind of shocked by this, actually. He's like a little kid who has finally lost interest in his favorite toy that once fed his narcissism so well. Thinking about it after a break to have all the reporting coalesce in my head, I thought of the narrative of how Coulter and Limbaugh et. al. dared him into it. And how he doesn't like when others force him to do things, or even the appearance that others have done so, that he has to have the appearance of control. So it's like that has killed it for him, the thrill is gone?

Doesn't change the problem, though, of huge fail for ego if he backs down.
