Michelle Alexander is showing the kind of courage that King did. She is doing it right now. She is my public intellectual hero for today. I was quite impressed with her op-ed. I am very happy that she has been given voice at the NYT.

MLK seems to have known enough in a year what others have taken decades to learn - there is no "win" there. The irony is the Promised Land seems to have been promised to everyone, multiple times, and now it runs on hollow and broken promises. Probably Moses got the best end of the deal - he at least got to keep his dreams.

He also questioned Israel’s action against Palestinians

[Update: King canceled a planned trip to Israel in September 1967 in part because of political misgivings over the annexation of Jerusalem. He reportedly told his aides in a conference call:

[“I’d run into the situation where I’m damned if I say this and I’m damned if I say that no matter what I’d say, and I’ve already faced enough criticism including pro-Arab. I just think that if I go, the Arab world, and of course Africa and Asia for that matter, would interpret this as endorsing everything that Israel has done, and I do have questions of doubt… Most of it [the pilgrimage] would be Jerusalem and they [the Israelis] have annexed Jerusalem, and any way you say it they don’t plan to give it up… I frankly have to admit that my instincts – and when I follow my instincts so to speak I’m usually right – I just think that this would be a great mistake. I don’t think I could come out unscathed”

Lu, it's time to speak out on people who try to coopt MLK into their hate filled terrorist supporting agendas. King was a strong and vocal supporter of the Zionist State of Israel and what it represented. He had sympathy for the Palestinian people but not for Arabs who sought not only to defeat but destroy Israel.

Using King's speech against the Vietnam War and comments about the Israel Arab War in '67 to infer he changing his mind about Israel is specious. I imagine he would have continued to support peace and peaceful resolution of any and all conflict.

He would have supported both sides when they were right and criticized both sides when they were wrong. I also imagine he would have some strong words for the BMC, the new Taliban sisters in congress and anyone who supports hate filled individuals such as Farrakhan.
