She is doing it right now. She is my public intellectual hero for today. I was quite impressed with her op-ed. I am very happy that she has been given voice at the NYT.

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 19:04:22 +0000 A Guy Called LULU comment 264070 at http://dagblog.com MLK seems to have known http://dagblog.com/comment/264069#comment-264069
In reply to King spoke out against anti

MLK seems to have known enough in a year what others have taken decades to learn - there is no "win" there. The irony is the Promised Land seems to have been promised to everyone, multiple times, and now it runs on hollow and broken promises. Probably Moses got the best end of the deal - he at least got to keep his dreams.

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 18:29:42 +0000 PeraclesPlease comment 264069 at http://dagblog.com King spoke out against anti http://dagblog.com/comment/264068#comment-264068
In reply to Lu, it's time to speak out on

King spoke out against anti-Semitism

"Peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security must be a reality."

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kvr2Cxuh2Wk

He also questioned Israel’s action against Palestinians

[Update: King canceled a planned trip to Israel in September 1967 in part because of political misgivings over the annexation of Jerusalem. He reportedly told his aides in a conference call:

[“I’d run into the situation where I’m damned if I say this and I’m damned if I say that no matter what I’d say, and I’ve already faced enough criticism including pro-Arab. I just think that if I go, the Arab world, and of course Africa and Asia for that matter, would interpret this as endorsing everything that Israel has done, and I do have questions of doubt… Most of it [the pilgrimage] would be Jerusalem and they [the Israelis] have annexed Jerusalem, and any way you say it they don’t plan to give it up… I frankly have to admit that my instincts – and when I follow my instincts so to speak I’m usually right – I just think that this would be a great mistake. I don’t think I could come out unscathed”

https://mondoweiss.net/2015/01/folks-talking-palestine/

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 17:50:02 +0000 rmrd0000 comment 264068 at http://dagblog.com Lu, it's time to speak out on http://dagblog.com/comment/264067#comment-264067
In reply to Time to Break the Silence on Palestine

Lu, it's time to speak out on people who try to coopt MLK into their hate filled terrorist supporting agendas. King was a strong and vocal supporter of the Zionist State of Israel and what it represented. He had sympathy for the Palestinian people but not for Arabs who sought not only to defeat but destroy Israel.

Using King's speech against the Vietnam War and comments about the Israel Arab War in '67 to infer he changing his mind about Israel is specious. I imagine he would have continued to support peace and peaceful resolution of any and all conflict.

He would have supported both sides when they were right and criticized both sides when they were wrong. I also imagine he would have some strong words for the BMC, the new Taliban sisters in congress and anyone who supports hate filled individuals such as Farrakhan.

Tue, 22 Jan 2019 17:14:05 +0000 Peter comment 264067 at http://dagblog.com
