Yes they've always been with us but before the internet the gullible had some difficulty finding the fictionalized version of reality. Media was limited and expensive and media that was easy to access was controlled by gate keepers that kept out the nonsense, as well as ideas that didn't fit the Overton Window. The internet has given a forum to any idea. That's both a good and a bad thing. It turns out that there are far more people than we expected swayed by the fictionalized version than the real version. Fiction seems to be more interesting than non-fiction, so much so that youtube especially, and other social media pushes it to keep people on their site. Appealing to gullibility and stupidity is a viable business strategy but it's becoming an increasing problem in the internet age. These people vote and act in society to the detriment of us all.

As to one subset, the crazed Qanon set, kinda related tweet I ran across. Maybe oddly, maybe I am unusual in this, but looking at the following did not freak me out, it helped me understand them a bit better. These are people who had extreme bitterness about "the elites" for some reason or another, and then get crazed out of control by leader types who take them on journeys and flights that make them feel like they have some control:

Yeah they are dangerous. But these people have always been with us, they fall for cults, for the certainty of strict prescribed beliefs, they can't handle the idea of chaos or change, they are easily brainwashed, they are great fodder for army sergeants, too. Etc. They have panic. Prayers, like mantras, are calming and actually probably works better than any pharma we have in this era...
