It's a common misperception, imo, among scientists that certain characteristics are uniquely human. It seems clear to me there is a lot in common among mammalian brains especially social animals like pack and herd mammals. There is no doubt in my mind that dogs experience empathy, compassion, sympathy even for strangers out side their pack. I'm not a zoologist but I'd bet most primates, as well as pigs and horses detect the feelings of others and feel in sympathy with them.
