Probably misleading - post-Chrysler bailout, middle of mass migration from Rust Belt to Sun Belt, Carter recession, Detroit hollowing out - this was all legacy money in Detroit suburbs figuring out how to survive - "last one to leave turn the lights out" days.

Interesting that Michigan seems to have been the place to earn great money in 1980,including the now notorious Flint:
