"Get off my lawn" certainly resonates, one way or the other. Obama also often seemed tired & rehearsed, yet the public bit on that - yet Beto's no Obama, no law degree, Dreams of My Well-Connected Wealthy White Father (& Father-in-Law!!!) hasn't been leaping off the store shelves. Tulsi's always been (over) confident, and no doubt the audience can relate to her being too strange for primetime. Democrats *should* take climate change seriously, but they won't, thus Inslee's mistake. Warren made a strong initial showing, and that impression lasted her even as her later performance faded - I think it's called "persistence of vision"?

Fri, 28 Jun 2019 09:39:05 +0000 PeraclesPlease comment 269181 at http://dagblog.com I'm sure there were a large http://dagblog.com/comment/269122#comment-269122
In reply to FWIW, I noticed this fairly

I'm sure there were a large number of hispanics watching that don't speak english that were happy to be able to understand 30 seconds of the debate.

Thu, 27 Jun 2019 17:06:37 +0000 ocean-kat comment 269122 at http://dagblog.com FWIW, I noticed this fairly http://dagblog.com/comment/269120#comment-269120
In reply to Hola. Politico gamely tried to tease out some consensus from 27 expert opinions, but these folks weren't all watching the same debate. There was plenty of praise for Warren, Booker, and Castro, and yet Liz Mair called Warren "a total non-factor in the latter two-thirds of the debate...having looked shaky and uncomfortable at various points when she was on camera."

Other impressions are all over the map...

One expert: "Among those earning another look with confident and relatable performances: Julián Castro, Amy Klobuchar, Tim Ryan and Tulsi Gabbard."

Another: "This first encounter produced two likely goners: Gabbard (too strange for primetime) and Ryan (out of his element on the debate stage)."

One: "Several candidates—namely Castro, Inslee and, dare I say, de Blasio—showed they have a powerful, resonant vision that Democratic voters should take seriously."

Another: "Gov. Jay Inslee is making a mistake going all-in on climate change, Mayor Bill de Blasio came off as the “get off my lawn” guy"

One: "O’Rourke struck me as Obama-esque at certain points in the evening, and I suspect Democratic primary voters will bite on that if he maintains that approach."

Another: "The big loser: Beto O'Rourke. Voters don't like it when you talk over another candidate, and his answers often seemed tired and rehearsed."

Moral: Don't trust pundits--or yourself--to objectively analyze debate performance.

Shorter Moral: Have some damn humility

Thu, 27 Jun 2019 12:09:00 +0000 Michael Wolraich comment 269115 at http://dagblog.com
