Following the local relatives, on the way up we went the "safe" route via 14 to Mojave. Returned via overnight stay at Ridgecrest-hard to find decent motels/hotels any closer!, that's how empty it is around there. And then in the morn we promptly made the wrong turn and ended up doing I-395 south that goes to San Bernadino through the desert and then west back to L.A. That territory is surreal enough for most without an earthquake! I went to a Walmart for provisions before we left Ridgecrest, that was a surreal experience in itself, nice people but strange, mostly military folk. Kernville, the town Mojave, the desert, it's all strange land, like being on another planet out there.. Right out of a "There Will Be Blood" type movie.

Edit to add: even tho the experts are saying this is all those two faults out there, must be frightening for everyone in So. Calif to have this pretty damn big stronger shock come after yesterday's. It's just not what they are used to, and clearly many are rattled by the atypical sequence. I would be too.

Sat, 06 Jul 2019 05:54:56 +0000 artappraiser comment 269519 at http://dagblog.com The 7.1 one was in the desert http://dagblog.com/comment/269518#comment-269518
In reply to Sen. A 7 is big. Likely not very populated there. If it hit in the La area it would cause a huge amount of damage, the '94 Northridge Ca quake was very destructive, (up to $40 billion), and only s high 6.

I was in a 6+ and two 5+ aftershocks in California in the 80s. In a car, in an apartment and outside in daylight. There is no experience like it, a rumbling, inanimate dull roaring sound coming from no apparent direction, and outside you see utility poles swaying in the same plane, but alternate directions, creaking with wires going slack then tight.

Sat, 06 Jul 2019 05:04:03 +0000 NCD comment 269518 at http://dagblog.com WATCH: KCAL9's anchors react http://dagblog.com/comment/269517#comment-269517
In reply to Second, larger quake shakes Southern California, also near Ridgecrest

WATCH: KCAL9's anchors react as 7.1-magnitude earthquake rolls through Southern California https://t.co/IxheTVPXj7 pic.twitter.com/5y1y4Wghmg
— CBS Los Angeles (@CBSLA) July 6, 2019

Update: According to USGS scientists, the earthquake was a 7.1 magnitude.
