From wikipedia:</p> <blockquote> <p><em>The Hidden Persuaders</em></p> <p>Vance Packard's book <em>The Hidden Persuaders</em>, about <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_manipulation" title="Media manipulation">media manipulation</a> in the 1950s, sold more than a million copies.</p> <p>In <em>The Hidden Persuaders</em>, first published in 1957, Packard explored advertisers' use of consumer motivational research and other psychological techniques, including depth psychology and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subliminal_message" title="Subliminal message">subliminal</a> tactics, to manipulate expectations and induce desire for products, particularly in the American postwar era. He identified eight "compelling needs" that advertisers promise products will fulfill.</p> <p>According to Packard, these needs are so strong that people are compelled to buy products merely to satisfy them. The book also explores the manipulative techniques of promoting politicians to the electorate. Additionally, the book questions the morality of using these techniques.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Packard#cite_note-DiRenzo-6">[6]</a></p> <p>While the book was a top-seller among middle-class audiences, it was widely criticised by marketing researchers and advertising executives as carrying a sensationalist tone and containing unsubstantiated assertions.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Packard#cite_note-7">[7]</a></p> <p>"The Naked Society"</p> <p>In a 1964 essay called "The Naked Society", Packard criticized advertisers' unfettered use of private information to create marketing schemes. He compared a recent <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Society" title="Great Society">Great Society</a> initiative by then-president <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_B._Johnson" title="Lyndon B. The essay led <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress" title="United States Congress">Congress</a> to create the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Subcommittee_on_the_Invasion_of_Privacy" title="Special Subcommittee on the Invasion of Privacy">Special Subcommittee on the Invasion of Privacy</a> and inspired privacy advocates such <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_Edward_Gallagher" title="Cornelius Edward Gallagher">Neil Gallagher</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Ervin" title="Sam Ervin">Sam Ervin</a> to fight Johnson's flagrant disregard for consumer privacy.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Packard#cite_note-8">[8]</a></p> </blockquote> </div></div></div> Mon, 12 Aug 2019 05:33:12 +0000 artappraiser comment 270447 at http://dagblog.com Look up “stochastic terrorism http://dagblog.com/comment/270446#comment-270446 <a id="comment-270446"></a> <p><em>In reply to <a href="http://dagblog.com/link/how-el-paso-killer-echoed-incendiary-words-conservative-media-stars-28832">How the El Paso Killer Echoed the Incendiary Words of Conservative Media Stars</a></em></p> <div class="field field-name-comment-body field-type-text-long field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p> </p><div class="media_embed"> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en" height="" width=""> <p dir="ltr" lang="en" xml:lang="en">Look up “stochastic terrorism”<a href="https://t.co/64EiMC8JXr">https://t.co/64EiMC8JXr</a> <a href="https://t.co/wTbqMphseV">https://t.co/wTbqMphseV</a></p> — Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) <a href="https://twitter.com/jaketapper/status/1160753725784412160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 12, 2019</a></blockquote> <script async="" charset="utf-8" height="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" width=""></script></div> </div></div></div> Mon, 12 Aug 2019 05:24:27 +0000 artappraiser comment 270446 at http://dagblog.com
