I think fear of this happening here is a big part of the it's the economy stupid reasoning that might make some Obama/Trump type voters stick with Trump even though there's a lot they no longer like about him. That it is also what is making establishment Dems wary of what's going to happen if the avowed "Democratic Socialistic" is the candidate. I also think those who are pro big-gov safety net too often infantilize voters who don't agree with them as all being mouth breathers falling for the socialism is evil right wing smears. I think a significant number are economically- libertarian socially-liberal elites who know that economies with large social safety nets have "moribund" problems. That's without even getting into the privacy issues of "big state."
