There is an excellent nine volume series done by Henry Louis Gates "The Image of the Black in Western Art" that covers this period

The series goes from the time of the Pharaohs to the Twentieth century

Thanks for sharing this, wasn't aware of it, there's top notch A++ art historical scholarship involved here, just like the good old days. No agenda beyond trying to figure out what the heck was really going on here.
