great piece. makes a compelling case for pacifism, even though i can't wrap my head around that entirely as a legitimate life philosophy. its kind of a catch-22 - until everyone agrees to be pacifistic, there will be times when fighting (and killing) are necessary, (which of course precludes the spread of pacificism). You could argue that both peace and war require two partners ready to tango, but it's a specious argument to make when your opponent wants to war and has a nuclear option (or as in the case of Hitler, a metaphorically equivalent plan).

what i will agree with without reservations is that we should be way more prudent in deciding to use the tremendous power we wield. Many times, the decision is gut-wrenching, complicated and morally ambiguous. And most of those times, we should err on the side of peace. That's why I feel the Second Iraq War will go down as one of the most shameful decisions in our nation's spotted history.

Well said. I watched Witness (with Harrison Ford) again, and it reminded me of the courage of the Anabaptists (the Amish are one branch) in refusing to fight. Although an atheist, I have complete respect for their principles in that regard.
