Yes & no, eg, Timothy McVeigh killed a lot of white people. I think sense of threat is often more abstract and in line with what Macy suggests. Rightwing violence tends to be aligned with state & maintaining/restoring a status quo. Leftwing violence seen as threat to status quo.

McVeigh wasn't targeting any race of people though, he was an anarchist targeting the US federal govt. If someone is targeting your race of people seems it makes sense to have a heightened sense of fear.

But didn’t he acknowledge the need to spill white blood (particularly those he considered traitors) in order to build the world he want to see (like in the Turner Diaries)? Same logic as Breivik.

Red herring though. He read turner diaries because it was advertised in a gun magazine he liked. He thought it had tactics he could use to overthrow the govt -- same reason Bin Laden would read Chomsky, not because he was a leftist. This is spelled out in American terrorist.

In fact in thousands of pages of interviews and writings from jail he never once mentioned any racist view as a motivator. And I think that's the entire point of terrorism, it's not like he had any incentive to conceal it.

Yeah McVeigh definitely crossed paths with these people a number of times, it's in American Terrorist as well. The authors, who knew both him and his family well, though go for my interpretation. After all they interviewed him for dozens of hours (as did Vidal).

Another interesting detail in the book is that the Iraq war in the Gulf was part of the reason he became so anti-government, he felt the government sent him to kill foreigners and dehumanize them. Like you said he had multiple forces pulling on him.
