In principle would you accept a form of lockdown can be effective in reducing transmission? As you say too many other factors to consider, but reducing transmission is the number one goal which lockdowns surely do help?

Lockdowns are sensible measures to avoid hospitals being overrun. That was the essence of the "flattening the curve" argument in the spring. It is a bit depressing than rather than building up capacity for the winter, we're back to square one, without any better long-term plan.

That I would wholeheartedly agree with, we should be in a better position than we are,for a variety of reasons we’re not. As undesirable as the measures are,they may be the best course of action in the current position.That & giving those who don’t take basic precautions a slap.

Isn't lockdown vs no lockdown a false choice? Masks and distancing until vaccine are the core concepts (I thought). If they don't happen, for whatever reason, lockdown is a last resort to save hospitals. What am I missing?

The same could be said for vaccines. I think if we were more accepting of the reality that 1st generation vaccines, while possibly reducing mortality and morbidity, are unlikely to halt transmission then we might think twice about serial lockdowns ad infinitum

also to consider: there's awful shit like this going on, it's like to be fair one has to let businesspeople judge their own risk about how hard whatever rules they choose will be to enforce. Alternately, if the government requires, they at least are covered by rule of law.
