yes and I think that is an important point just totally blown aside by the drama of the storming of the Bastille: most of the "Stop the Steal" crowd was law abiding and not dangerous at all. To the point where if law enforcement had properly ringed the whole perimeter of the Capitol with riot-gearing wearing officers and vans of swat team equipment, it would have been ridiculed by many including anti-police lefties and free speech on the street absolutists.

I posted on the "Capitol breached" thead a joke that was tweeted right as it started happening, I think it still applies, it was by German Lopez, retweeted by Yglesias, it's gone now, either deleted by Lopez himself or by Twitter. It was snark about the very common BLM-supporting comment like "but but but the majority of the protesters are peaceful". Neither side takes the danger of mobs forming during protests seriously enough. It's like oh they were just a bunch of renegades. Same thing with the storming of the Bastille or the Boston Massacre for that matter! Just a bunch of rioters and/or upstarts is all it takes.

While there may have been thousands or even tens of thousands there most weren't willing to fight to get into the capitol. While they may have occupied the territory after those willing to fight moved forward they weren't there for the fight. In every video I saw there were at most a couple of hundred confronting the police who were so few they were over whelmed. If the police numbers weren't so meager those couple of hundred could have been stopped.

The key difference from the authoritarian you describe and the Congressional theater happening here is that the legislators involved don't want the results of the election changed. They want to inherit the zombie army Trump assembled for their own purposes.

Suppose that the process somehow ended up having Trump declared the victor by Pence. It is difficult to imagine how that outcome could happen but set that problem aside for the moment. This would lead to a crisis of governance where many people in power would not accept the result. A coup would require stripping that power through the assertion of martial law. That means having enough military people on your side to make it work. When people start resisting that move, political prisoners are taken or killed for demonstration purposes.
