Defamation cases have made waves across an uneasy right-wing media landscape, from Fox to Newsmax.

In just a few weeks, lawsuits and legal threats from a pair of obscure election technology companies have achieved what years of advertising boycotts, public pressure campaigns and liberal outrage could not: curbing the flow of misinformation in right-wing media.

Fox Business canceled its highest rated show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” on Friday after its host was sued as part of a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit. On Tuesday, the pro-Trump cable channel Newsmax cut off a guest’s rant about rigged voting machines. Fox News, which seldom bows to critics, has run fact-checking segments to debunk its own anchors’ false claims about electoral fraud.

This is not the typical playbook for right-wing media, which prides itself on pugilism and delights in ignoring the liberals who have long complained about its content. But conservative outlets have rarely faced this level of direct assault on their economic lifeblood.

Smartmatic, a voter technology firm swept up in conspiracies spread by former President Donald J. Trump and his allies, filed its defamation suit against Rupert Murdoch’s Fox empire on Thursday, citing Mr. Dobbs and two other Fox anchors, Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro, for harming its business and reputation.

Dominion Voting Systems, another company that Mr. Trump has accused of rigging votes, filed defamation suits last month against two of the former president’s lawyers, Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sidney Powell, on similar grounds. Both firms have signaled that more lawsuits may be imminent.

Litigation represents a new front in the war against misinformation, a scourge that has reshaped American politics, deprived citizens of common facts and paved the way for the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Fox News, for instance, paid millions last year to settle a claim from the family of a murdered Democratic National Committee staff member falsely accused by Fox hosts of leaking emails to WikiLeaks [....]

Stelter adds a point that is often missed: high ratings does not necessarily always equal high profit in advertising dollars! From Feb. 6 Mediaite article by Caleb Howe of CNN show:

CNN’s Brian Stelter on Saturday called the cancelling of Lou Dobbs a “curious” move by Fox, saying it isn’t clear why they would punish him but not other on-air personalities that were equally to blame for spreading Donald Trump‘s claims about a stolen election and drawing massive lawsuits against the company.

Stelter also suggested that, even though this is a literal cancellation, it’s less an example of cancel culture than it is “consequence” culture.

Anchor Victor Blackwell discussed the new $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox and Dobbs, and then asked Stelter “Do you know how much of that factor the lawsuit played in, potentially into Dobbs’ firing?”

“Right, that certainly seems like it was a factor, but sources at Fox say there were other factors as well,” said Stelter. “They say Dobbs’ show, although relatively high rated for Fox Business, was actually a loss leader, because advertisers did not want to be associated with his extreme right-wing content.”

Stelter then brought up Fox News host Tucker Carlson as an example of a similar situation with advertisers.

“Of course that’s true for others at Fox, like Tucker Carlson. But Carlson has a much bigger audience. So there are definitely multiple factors here, but the timing is clear,” said Stelter. “The timing is obvious. He was on the air Thursday, the lawsuit was filed on Thursday, he was off the air on Friday, he’s never coming back. That is a shocking move by a network, to make.”

“You have to wonder if what the network is doing is basically coming up with a sacrificial lamb in the midst of this massive lawsuit, and then waiting to see what will happen next,” he continued. “I know that Dobbs and other hosts on Fox rail against cancel culture, they say they’re being canceled. Well this is an actual cancellation, but this might really be more like a consequence culture. There are consequences for constantly peddling falsehoods on television, and at least in this one case, perhaps there are real consequences for Dobbs.”

A referendum of the status of Puerto Rico was held on November 3, 2020, concurrently with the general election. The Referendum was announced by Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced on May 16, 2020. This was the sixth referendum held on the status of Puerto Rico, with the previous one having taken place in 2017. This was the first referendum with a simple yes-or-no question, with voters having the option of voting for or against becoming a U.S. state. The New Progressive Party (PNP), of whom Vázquez is a member, supports statehood, while the opposition Popular Democratic Party (PDP) and Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) oppose it.

The referendum was non-binding, as the power to grant statehood lies with the US Congress. The referendum was not approved by the US Department of Justice. The party platforms of both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party have affirmed for decades Puerto Rico's right to self-determination and to be admitted as a state, at least in theory, but individual Republican legislators have been more skeptical. For example, former Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2019 refused to allow a statehood vote in the Senate and called statehood for Puerto Rico "government overreach."[1]

Based on the completed official election night count, the option to pursue statehood won the referendum 52.52%–47.48%.[2] [....]

Special selling point on that choice: if you read any of the analysis on "Hispanics" and the vote, contrary to stereotype, you'll see there's more support of old fashioned Romney-type GOP among them than one would suspect...

Only drawback will be Mitch McConnell won't be able to obstruct the Senate from doing anything, even if Kentucky is the last one holding the bag, Rand would never buck him anyway.
