A lot of countries had regular payments to their citizens that lost their jobs. Australia for example had the job keepers program. Germany also had a program. The US is the only nation that made checks a thing because they didn’t have any support system

James is not wrong. He's talking about monthly checks to people regardless of employment status. These are paycheck replacement measures. They're analogous to expanded UI and PPP loans in the US.

The right was hostile to UBI because it said people would have no incentive to work, but many on the left were hostile because they rightly UBI might break down the demand for various other welfare agencies.
