To answer the question at the top of this post: so far, it's still looking like it won't mean that much federally as long as Biden is in charge:

Voters back Biden’s infrastructure plan, 57% to 24%. One of every four Republicans said they support it.

As for paying for it by raising taxes on corporations, 62% of respondents are in favor (including 29% of Republicans) vs. 26% opposed.

Not playing a game, just admitting that I am very torn about the realities of small-d-democracy in this age where people can be more easily manipulated than ever before.

In any case, that doesn't have to do with these state regulation issues, which simply strike me as ridiculous because I don't see any reason there shouldn't be the same exact voting procedure across the nation in this day and age.

I don't know if you're serious or playing some equalitarian game. Putting aside the question of intelligence the only way you couldn't know that most people are woefully uninformed about most of the questions politics deals with is you haven't spent much time talking about the issues with anyone but the most highly educated elite class. Worse yet is many of the things they suppose they know are lies

My experience in government, ranging from local government to state government to Congress, think tanks, etc. is that most of them think the general public is uninformed, find elections annoying, and generally don't like democratic accountability. The softer Kevin Williamson view

Political parties will often support any electoral reform they think will benefit them, but not because they on principle want there to be more democracy. That's just my experience, maybe there is some group of politicians out there who ignore their egos entirely. Who knows.

Truth be told, I am reminded of NCD of Dagblog ranting often in the past about how stupid and uninformed most of the American electorate is. To which I would have a initial negative gut reaction, really negative. But then I would think about what worried the founders about non-elite voters in a "one man, one vote" democracy. And how they tried to institute lots of safeguards of a republic according to their own zeitgeist, and how many of them were against political parties. So I sort of would always throw my hands up on the whole meme.
